A child dies of malaria approximately every 2 minutes and Nigeria accounts for about 27% of all malaria cases worldwide. In commemoration of World Malaria Day, Dorthwell Foundation collaborated with National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP) and held an outreach to Mpape community in Abuja in the month of April 2024.
The event was held at Lea primary school Mpape and in attendance were over 1206 men and women from the community including their traditional leaders. We gave extensive education on the spread and possible breeding environments of mosquitoes that transmit malaria. Health officials also carried out free testing and provided medications to those who were positive. We distributed insecticide-treated nets to everyone present and educated them on the importance of using them as prevention is a cheaper health approach than cure. Procedures on how to handle the nets before being used were also discussed.
A woman named Mercy Abraham was followed home to ascertain the living condition of her home. We recorded how often her and her family get malaria in a month. This is to compare this history with any future transmission after the introduction of the distributed insecticide-treated nets.
